What is the difference between an ambulance service and a wheelchair or stretcher company?

The difference between an ambulance service and a wheelchair or stretcher company is ambulance companies are licensed by the State of Florida in accordance with Florida Statute 401 to provide specified levels of medical care. Emergency Medical Services (EMS) operate under medical direction and their vehicles are staffed by state certified emergency medical technicians (EMT) and paramedics. These personnel have met the education requirements established by the department and maintain on-going training in order to re-certify on a bi-annual basis.

Wheelchair and non-medical stretcher companies are businesses that provide courtesy transportation only. They are NOT regulated by the state and operate under county ordinances (when established) only. Their vehicles are not authorized under state guidelines to carry any medical equipment or supplies. This includes the use of oxygen.
